Real quick one this week.
Seoul is drowning in its worst rainstorms and flash floods in 80 years:
Luckily, my girlfriend and a few friends and I escaped literally a day before the storm out to the East Sea for magnificent weather by the beach. Lucky as hell.
Now I’m dead tired back in the city, so I figured I’ll show you guys what we munched on. We ate some of the best food I’ve had in Korea, no joke. That’s saying something.
Being by the sea, of course, we mainly ate fresh seafood. The left two are either raw squid or fish in this delicious sweet-sour soup with noodles. On the right are little oysters and cockles mixed with rice and other deliciousness — kind of a seafood version of bibimbap, a saucy rice-y bowl.
Recharge in the hotel room with customary instant ramens.
This was legit one of the best home-style meals I’ve had in Korea. On the bottom that soup was the most comforting, kind-of-potato-like porridge. Above was a meaty-ass grilled fish, above that is braised pork and kimchi, and above that is dwoenjjangjjigae (soybean stew). Every banchan (side dish) was made to absolute perfection, too.
I literally went up to the owners and told them that I’m an American living here for 4 years and this was one of the best meals I’ve had. They were thankful but didn’t look surprised. Need to come back here.
Grilling meat. No surprise here. Absolutely delicious.
Then finally ordered lots more hwe, which is the Korean way to say sashimi, or raw fish. Mixed with soupy noodles, mixed with dry noodles, or wrap it up in a ssam (Korean lettuce wrap) with some garlic, ssamjjang (sauce in the middle), and shove it in.
That’s it. Recovery time.
Send well wishes that we get less rain. Pls.

Wow, my mouth is literally watering. Need to find some solid authentic Korean spots in the Bay Area stat!
It's heartbreaking to hear the devastating news of the crazy flood in Seoul and what a relief to know you avoided the situation! The food pictures looks amazing!! I hope you have enough in your pantry to manage the next few days to survive without going out. STAY SAFE!!!
